* Karl Bryullov (1799-1852), a representative of Russian Academicism, lived and worked in Italy for 12 years. There he painted one of his world-famous works: the monumental The Last Day of Pompeii, which today hangs in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. But the public loved him mostly for his skilled portraits of Russian and European aristocrats.
